The Angu-sai

E The Angu-sai: Ritual performed at the temporary shed housing God for the festival (Agu or Okariya)

The Angu-sai

Unlike the festival floats with doll on top (Dashi) and festival floats without doll (Yatai) parade, or lively traditional Japanese band (Ohayashi), Angu-sai ritual does not have any splendor, but it is the essence and one of the solemn Shinto ritual of the festival. The head of the Shinto priest and festival officials gather at Okariya, and head festival representative wearing a white Shinto priest’s robe recites the ritual prayer, offers a branch of the sacred tree to Gods, and pray for divine protection in front of the portable shrine (Mikoshi), where God is being enshrined.
